Transforming a Dated Victorian Bathroom into a Functional, Updated Space
In Sacramento’s Sierra Oaks neighborhood, a homeowner contacted Luxehome Construction to breathe new life into their aging Victorian-style bathroom. The space hadn’t been updated in decades, and while it still carried some period charm, it was no longer practical for everyday use. The bulky built-ins, outdated plumbing, and inefficient layout made it difficult to enjoy or maintain. The client wanted a bathroom that felt clean, comfortable, and functional—something that could support daily routines while reflecting a more modern design sensibility.
Out With the Old: Removing the Tub Enclosure
The centerpiece of the old bathroom was a drop-in bathtub surrounded by a large, enclosed platform that spanned the length of the back wall. While it may have once been considered a luxury feature, it took up far too much space and made the room feel boxed in. We removed the entire tub structure and rerouted the plumbing to allow for a new freestanding soaking tub. This instantly opened up the room, creating more visual space and allowing natural light to flow through uninterrupted.
Adding a Frameless Glass Shower
Right next to the new tub, we installed a frameless glass shower enclosure. This decision was about more than just aesthetics—frameless showers help make a bathroom feel larger, cleaner, and more modern. The clear lines of sight help highlight other design elements, and the lack of bulky frames means less to clean and maintain. The shower was custom-sized to fit the space and finished with premium fixtures that match the rest of the bathroom.
Replacing the Vanities With a Unified Setup
The original layout included two separate vanities with bowl sinks and a pony wall divider. Not only did this break up the room visually, but it also made the space feel crowded. We removed the wall and replaced both vanities with a single, continuous double-sink vanity featuring bronze hardware, under-mount sinks, and custom cabinetry. This updated configuration streamlined the space and improved both storage and functionality. Our remodeling team also relocated all necessary plumbing to support the new layout seamlessly.
Rewiring the Bathroom for Modern Needs
As part of the full renovation, we completely rewired the bathroom to meet modern electrical standards. Recessed LED lighting was added throughout the ceiling to brighten the space and provide even illumination without cluttering the design. In place of the single oversized mirror, we installed two framed mirrors above each sink. This subtle change added balance and symmetry, while also making the vanity area feel more custom and complete.
Wall Protection and Visual Appeal With Tile
The original bathroom had vinyl wall panels, which were functional but not visually appealing. We replaced them with tile installed halfway up all four walls. Not only does this help protect the walls from moisture and splashes, but it also brings added texture and style to the space. The tile was carefully selected to complement the floors, cabinetry, and fixtures, tying the whole design together.
Finishing Touches: Flooring, Shutters, and Style
One of the last upgrades was replacing the old flooring with wood-look luxury vinyl planks. These planks offer the warm look of hardwood with the moisture resistance and durability needed in a bathroom. They’re easy to clean and provide a soft, slip-resistant feel underfoot. We also installed custom shutters on the windows for a clean, timeless finish that offers privacy without sacrificing natural light.
Every detail—from fixture placement to material selection—was chosen to balance functionality with comfort. The end result is a bathroom that’s not just visually updated, but significantly more useful for everyday life. There’s more space to move, more storage where it’s needed, and a better overall flow that makes the room easier to navigate.
