Often used interchangeably, contemporary kitchens and modern kitchens share many similarities but are actually very different.
Modern Kitchen Design
Modern means something utterly different in interior design than what we refer to it in everyday language. Modernism is a particular design style that was born in the early 20th century as a response to the Art Deco era. It is a style that prioritizes form – clean lines, minimal embellishments, sleek appliances, and fixtures – over function. The words sleek and minimalist and to many, Scandinavian should come to mind when envisioning a modern kitchen.
Most modern kitchens are contemporary; however, not all contemporary kitchens are modern.
Contemporary Kitchen Design
Unlike modern designs, which are period-specific adjacent (like Gothic, Victorian, Art Deco), contemporary is a dynamic and floating term that speaks to the current time period it is in. For example, Victorian homes were contemporary in the mid-1800s (during the Victorian Era), but they weren’t in the mid-1950s (an era of modernism). Similarly, your traditional farmhouse kitchen is contemporary in 2019, but it’s not modern. It’s not to say that you can’t have certain modern features intermixed with a traditional design, it just makes it contemporary, not modern.
Contemporary kitchens use products and finishes from the current era in which you are living. A contemporary kitchen today would include things like smart appliances, eco-friendly products, and finishes. It would embrace more rounded and gentle curves as opposed to the stark right angles of modernism. It would also use more natural materials, unlike modern kitchens that typically use plasterboard and composites. Contemporary kitchens would also incorporate a balance of neutral colors like grays and browns with splashes of color throughout. Modern kitchens tend to gravitate towards a sleek white look.
Kitchen Design Trends
The subtle difference between the two shouldn’t be a hangup in designing your dream kitchen. In fact, interweaving characteristics of the two opens up a world of endless opportunities for your dream kitchen. You’ll want first to establish the foundation of kitchen usage – how you use your kitchen. The design component will flow nicely along as a result.
Kitchen islands have been proven to be a must-have for most contemporary kitchens. Whatever style you choose for your cabinets and countertops should be mimicked in your island as well. Another trending design is a recycling hub. These two trends require a bigger and more open floor plan.
Depending on your home, you may even want to have a multipurpose kitchen that serves the indoor and outdoor. For those whose budget does not allow a full outdoor kitchen in the background, you may want to consider an indoor kitchen that has a food prep area and other essentials close to the patio door.
There are also specific needs that various family members will need. Slip-resistant flooring and rounded countertop edges are just a few of the design specifics some families that have young children or older parents living with them would require. What’s right for your family will be different than your neighbors. That’s why it’s always a good idea to speak to a specialist to see how you can build the perfect kitchen for your family and lifestyle.
